About Norway Maple in Alberta
Norway Maple is an introduced European and western Asian shade tree used in Alberta urban and residential plantings. It is not native, but Alberta municipal and rating sources show real planted presence, so it should not be treated as merely hypothetical or extremely rare. For ARA, notable specimens are most likely mature neighborhood, institutional, park, or civic trees that show older urban planting taste, dense shade value, cultivar history, and the tradeoffs of shallow roots and heavy shade.
Identification: Leaves are opposite, simple, broad, glossy, and palmately lobed, usually with five pointed lobes. Breaking the petiole produces milky sap, one of the best field traits for separating Norway Maple from sugar maple and other planted maples.
Alberta range and habitat: Norway Maple is not native to Alberta. Canadian occurrence is introduced or cultivated.
