About Sugar Maple in Alberta
Sugar maple is an eastern North American hardwood and Canadian symbol that is not native to Alberta, but it does occur as a selective planted tree in curated Alberta landscapes. For ARA, a mature sugar maple in Alberta is significant less because the species is common here and more because long-term survival can reflect planting history, careful site selection, symbolic intent, and rarity of convincing mature specimens.
Identification: Leaves are opposite and usually 5-lobed. The most useful field trait is the rounded U-shaped sinuses between the lobes, with margins generally less sharply serrate than red maple. Compared with silver maple, the leaf looks fuller and less deeply cut.
Alberta range and habitat: Sugar maple is not supported as native or wild in Alberta by the accepted distribution used. ARA should treat Alberta records as planted unless strong evidence shows otherwise.
