About Unidentified Larch in Alberta
Unidentified larch is a holding entry for Alberta records that are clearly larches but not yet resolved to species. It must not carry one fixed native, introduced, common, or rare status, because Alberta larch records can represent native tamarack, native subalpine larch, rare native western larch contexts, or planted foreign larches such as Siberian larch.
Identification: Larches are deciduous conifers. Needles are borne in tufts on short spur shoots and singly on long extension shoots, then drop in fall. This deciduous-conifer habit is the first broad clue that a record belongs in Larix rather than spruce, pine, or fir.
Alberta range and habitat: This entry has no single wild distribution. A wet lowland peatland or muskeg context strongly suggests tamarack. A high Rocky Mountain alpine or timberline context strongly suggests subalpine larch. A limited southwestern mountain forest context may raise western larch. Records outside these contexts may be planted.
