About Unidentified Poplar in Alberta
Unidentified Poplar is a genus-level holding entry for Alberta aspens, balsam poplars, cottonwoods, planted poplars, and hybrid clones that cannot yet be resolved to species. Alberta poplars include major native trees and common planted forms, so this entry should be used as a triage page rather than a blended pseudo-species. For ARA, the key question is whether the tree belongs to a native aspen context, a native balsam or cottonwood riparian context, or a planted clone, shelterbelt, or urban hybrid context.
Identification: Leaves are alternate and vary widely by poplar type. Trembling aspen has smaller rounded leaves with flattened petioles that flutter in wind, but that trait should not be treated as universal for all Alberta poplars. Balsam poplar and cottonwoods often have larger, heavier leaves.
Alberta range and habitat: Alberta wild Populus records may include trembling aspen across much of the province, balsam poplar through much of Alberta at low to medium elevations, and cottonwoods mainly in southern river valleys.
