About White Oak in Alberta

White oak is a major eastern North American oak that is not native to Alberta, but it can occur here as a rare cultivated tree in protected planted landscapes. For ARA, mature Alberta white oaks are notable because they represent long-term ornamental survival, planting history, and possibly commemorative or collection value outside the species' native range.

Identification: Leaves are alternate with rounded lobes and no bristle tips. The lobes are generally smooth and balanced compared with the more irregular, waisted appearance of many bur oak leaves.

Alberta range and habitat: White oak is not native to Alberta and should not be treated as a wild Alberta oak. Any Alberta record should be assumed planted unless strong evidence shows otherwise.
