Eagle Point Aspen

Trembling Aspen (Populus tremuloides)

About this verified tree

The Eagle Point Aspen is the largest known aspen tree in Alberta. It grows in Eagle Point Provincial Park, near Drayton Valley, in an old-growth deciduous forest along the North Saskatchewan River. The surrounding stand is dominated by balsam poplar and paper birch, with the aspen rooted in rich, moist floodplain soils typical of long-undisturbed river forests. The tree shows a large vertical crack on one side of the trunk, a sign of age and structural stress, but its crown remains strong and well-formed. Most major branches are intact and vigorous, and overall the tree appears healthy despite its damage. Its survival and size make it a clear example of an old-growth aspen that has persisted through decades of change while remaining biologically active.
