Electrified Elm

American Elm (Ulmus americana)

About this verified tree

During a particularly violent storm one rainy evening in 2018-2019, a powerful bolt of lightning struck a tree on my block in the Holyrood neighbourhood. When the 'flash' and the 'BANG" occur simultaneously, you know you just had a close call. I have a habit of walking around the block nearly every morning, but on this following day I was looking for damaged property or trees. Well I certainly found it! This tree just around the corner was very definitely nailed by that lightning strike. It has survived, but a large section of its bark was blown off and scattered around the adjacent area. Today, a few large ‘split bark’ areas betray the only indication anything ever happened to this otherwise healthy 'Survivor' tree. It continues to grow in perfect health today, but the scars of that event remain.
