Elk Island Massive Birch
Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera)
Paper Birch
About this verified tree
This very large Paper Birch grows along the west side of the Tawayik Lake trail system in Elk Island National Park. Paper birch often grow in multi-trunked clumps. This tree’s single trunk growth pattern is quit unusual for a birch this age. At the time it was photographed, the tree had been heavily damaged by forest tent caterpillars. Much of the surrounding birch canopy was stripped, giving the stand a bare, skeletal appearance.
