About this verified tree

This is an exceptional Sugar Maple located west of the Quad and near Assiniboia Hall. This tree is very large for its species, and very healthy. It was named in honour of John Thomas Ferguson, BCom ’64, LLD ’98, a University of Alberta alumnus, business leader, and longtime supporter of the university. Ferguson served as Chair of the U of A Board of Governors from 1994 to 1997 and also as the university’s 17th Chancellor from 2000 to 2004. He also held senior leadership roles in Canadian business and remained involved with the university and broader community throughout his career. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2011 in recognition of his contributions to business, education, and public service.
