MacEwan Chokecherry

Shrubert Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana 'Schubert')

About this verified tree

Recognizing the value of trees to the Earth’s natural environment and to commemorate the new millennium in 2000 Dr. J. W. Grant MacEwan gave a Schubert chokecherry as a gift to each of six of his closest friends and associates. One of these was to Grant MacEwan College for which Dr. MacEwan serves as the namesake. As an educator, politician, historian, environmentalist and perhaps most notably as a former Lieutenant Governor of the province, Dr. MacEwan holds a significant place in Alberta’s history. This tree was planted on the south lawn of City Center Campus of Grant MacEwan College, and on October 22, 2002 the College dedicated the tree to Dr. MacEwan to commemorate what would have been his 100th year. Dr. MacEwan’s daughter, Heather Foran-MacEwan, was present for the dedication and unveiled a plaque that remains on site to acknowledge this event. Dorothy Gray (one of the 6) will contact the others and get their permission to include their trees as part of this nomination. The person in Calgary who started all this by sending info to Dorothy has one of the trees (TF55) - says it is an apple. Apparently these 6 trees were not all Chokecherry. They were donated by Golden Acres - Wade Hartwell. She may also have a list of many trees Dr. MacEwan planted throughout the Province!
