Margaret Martin Willow

Unidentified Willow (Salix sp.)

About this verified tree

Community Landmark on the property of a Heritage house built by Margaret Martin in 1907. Historical home - built by a widow with 10 children. 100 years+ trees - very healthy this could be the oldest tree in Edmonton. An article speaking to this was found in the Edmonton Journal. It has also been a part of a recently released Heritage film on the house. Margaret Martin worked in the Women’s Temperance Union - brought the vote to women in Canada. The Martin Willow was planted by Margaret Martin in 1907. Shockingly this tree has thrived for over 100 years in the bustling neighbourhood of Whyte Avenue. Along with the tree Margaret's historic house still stands with a plaque describing her struggles. I personally love this tree because of its incredible size. When I put my arms around it they barely cover a fraction of it. Because this tree stands in a historic part of our city hopefully it survives for many years to come.
