Mon Amie Willow

Laurel-Leaf Willow (Salix pentandra)

About this verified tree

Tucked into a private backyard in Edmonton's Glenora neighbourhood stands one of the largest willows in the city. Named the Mon Amie Willow after the friendly family dog Mon Amie, French for "my friend," the tree was planted in the 1940s, back when the street out front was still gravel. It's believed to have come from the Lacombe Nursery, based in St. Albert. The same nursery planted a number of other trees around the neighbourhood during that era. By the 1980s it had already drawn attention from the City of Edmonton, who offered to help maintain it, and it became a subject of interest for students at the time. Pruned annually, the willow is tentatively identified as a laurel leaf willow. Its exact location is kept private at the owners' request, though they're happy to share its story with the community through ARA.
