This ancient cottonwood growing in the river valley in Dinosaur Provincial Park has endured centuries of hardship and stands to represent a lost old growth forest. The Monarch Cottonwood is a local favourite tree and is one of the only remaining trees of a previous 200+ year old forest that partially burned in 1989. Cottonwoods rarely reach this age due to their short lifespan and difficulty sprouting. In this location, "cottonwood growing season" only happens every ~5 years as they require the right available moisture and timing to sprout. This tree shows the form that an ancient cottonwood can take after centuries growing in a hard climate, and represents the lost forests that used to inhabit the area.
