Siberian Elm (Ulmus pumila)
Siberian Elm
About this verified tree
This tree is recognized as both a Champion and Centurion Siberian Elm of Alberta, remarkable not only for its immense size but also for its unique place in Edmonton’s urban history. Siberian Elm is not commonly planted as a boulevard tree in the province, yet this individual has stood for over a century as one of the city’s most distinctive streetside plantings. According to Edmonton’s urban forestry staff, this tree is believed to be the oldest boulevard tree in the city. Its enormous stature is reflected in its measurements, which far exceed typical Siberian Elms in Alberta. The city has even modified the surrounding sidewalk to accommodate the tree’s vast surface root system, a rare recognition of its significance and living presence in the streetscape. Based on its age and condition, it was likely planted around 1910–1920, when the City of Edmonton was encouraging citizens to plant boulevard trees to green the young city’s streets. During that period, residents experimented with species that were not commonly used, and this Siberian Elm stands as a living reminder of Edmonton’s early urban forestry efforts.
