Pincherry (Prunus pensylvanica)

About this verified tree

Emerald Award-winning Naturescape, planted 2005 Centennial year. In 2005, for Alberta’s Centennial, Riverdale Elementary School students planted native trees, shrubs, and flowers. The ”Naturescape’ grew quickly and In 2006 the Riverdale Elementary school won an Emerald Award for their outdoor learning center. The Native trees actually grew so well that support wires choked three fast growing trees within one year of planting. In 2007 a heavy storm blew the three trees down. All the other trees including three smaller Pin Cherries still stand strong and grow on. The students mourned the loss of the destroyed trees and grow more protective towards the Pin Cherries. The School and Community are proud of their Naturescape and the Pin Cherries bring us joy all year. In spring they they are full with white blossoms and later bright red fruit bring birds and song to our community all summer. The shared nurturing of the Naturescape bonds school and community together. The students would like to nominate the three native pin cherries from the Naturescape for an Alberta Heritage Tree Nomination. Pin Cherries are special trees and they create a special place in Riverdale. We are reminded daily that Alberta’s special places cannot be taken for granted. They need to be celebrated and protected. The native Pin Cherries are a celebration of our rich natural heritage and a gift of this heritage to the future students at Riverdale..
