The Deeprooted Douglas Fir

Rocky Mountain Douglas-Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca)

About this verified tree

My Dad and I scheduled a trip out to the Porcupine Hills in hopes of finding a semi large Douglas Fir. Never in a million years did I think we would find one of the largest of its kind. Seated on a south facing slope, this Douglas Fir is estimated to be anywhere from 740 to 980 years old. It has had its top 32 feet of trunk blown off from the brutal storms that pass through this area. This tree is covered in lichen on the west side of its trunk showing the micro climate that it lives in. It is one of the largest of its species in all of Alberta and located in a rare pocket of ancient trees.
