William Pearce Park Pond Cottonwood

Narrowleaf Cottonwood (Populus angustifolia James)

About this verified tree

This old growth Cottonwood grows on the shore of the William Pearce Park pond. This is the larger of two twin trees right next to each other. This tree is listed as a Narrowleaf Cottonwood, but this is not confirmed. Its leaves are more narrow than a typical Plains or Eastern Cottonwood and look closer to a Balsam Poplar, however, the leaves have the grooves and edges expected of a Cottonwood. The bark also resembles a Cottonwood. This tree is a prime example of how old growth specimens can be preserved during developement. There is also a unique grove of cottonwoods to the east of this tree, although they are significantly younger.
